Let's assume there's a cap in the range of $150-$165M. I think they'd go that high for the right deals. Maybe Fred wants a champion before he sails off into the sunset?

Baseball reference has their total salaries right now at $125.2M. That doesn't include Wright's salary, but it also includes all of Cespedes'. I think that might be a good place to start.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/team ... acts.shtml

So, YOU are BVW. What do you do, other than admire your perfect hair?

Here's a set of ideas from me:

- Trade Vargas, Frazier, Gimenez, Peterson, Riley to the DBacks for Grienke and $23M.
- Trade Dom Smith and Nogosek to Pirates for Cervelli.
- Sign Andrew Miller (3/$27 from MLBTR).
- Sign Marwin Gonzalez (3/$27 one year less than MLBTR; throw in a mutual option).

That gets me to $164.8M. Lineup looks average, but will look a lot better if Ces makes it back.

Nimmo LF/CF
Conforto RF
Cano 2B
Alonso 1B
McNeil 3B
Cervelli C
Gonzalez LF/Lagares CF
Rosario SS

deGrom
Grienke
Thor
Wheeler
Matz

Diaz
Miller
Lugo
Gsellman
Smith
Zamora
Wahl/Bashlor/Sewald

-Sign one of Miller or Robertson for the pen.
-Sign another middle reliver, not necessarily of the caliber and price of the two above
-Sign Wilson Ramos for two years
-Bring in a defensive-oriented outfielder

I agree. The one thing I would add is to start adding some starting pitching depth (someone like Derek Holland).

Trade Toffey and Wahl for Cervelli

Sign Britton 3/$40m

Sign Jones 2/$18 (I think he can be a nice addition until Cespedes comes back)

DFA Tda

11.5 + 13 + 9 + .6 = $34.1m

Nimmo (RF)
Cervelli (C)
Cano (2B)
Alonso (1B)
Conforto (LF)
Jones (CF)
McNeil (3B)
Rosario (SS)

Two pen arms: Joakim Soria (2-yr, $14m), Brad Boxberger (1-yr, $8m)
Salary dump: Jason Vargas and Anthony Kay to Kansas City for Ofrediy Gomez
Upgrade at fifth starter: Charlie Morton (2-yr, $26m)
Realmuto trade: Alonso, Peterson, Vientos, Humphries for Realmuto
tDA gone: d'Arnaud to Boston for Roniel Raudes
First base placeholder: Matt Davidson (1-yr, $3m)

- Upgraded the pen, upgraded the lineup, upgraded, upgraded the rotation, and killed the farm. I'd also consider extensions for Nimmo, Wheeler and the newly acquired Realmuto

Based on these parameters, you essentially have $40 million to spend... Let's go crazy!

Trade 1: Zack Greinke, Archie Bradley and $20 million for Jason Vargas, Andres Gimenez, Dominic Smith and David Peterson. (add of 21.5 mil)

Trade 2: Francisco Cervelli for Travis d'Arnaud, Desmond Lindsey and Will Toffey (add 7.5 mil)

Trade 3: Sign Marwin Gonzalez, 3 years, $27 million (7/9/11). Net add of $7 million.

Free Agent: Xavier Cedeno, 1 year, $2 million

Free Agent: Robbie Grossman, 1 year, $2 million

Lineup
1. Nimmo CF
2. Cervelli C
3. Cano 2B
4. Alonso 1B
5. Conforto RF
6. Gonzalez LF (and hopefully Cespedes later)
7. Frazier/McNeil 3B
8. Rosario SS

1. deGrom
2. Greinke
3. Syndergaard
4. Wheeler
5. Matz

1. Diaz
2. Bradley
3. Lugo
4. Gsellman
5. Cedeno
6. Bashlor
7. Zamora

Bench
Plawecki, C
Frazier/McNeil IF
Lagares OF
Grossman OF
Cecchini IF

I'm intrigued by Marwin G. Wish he played CF though. He seems to have had a little success in the NL East, unlike AJ Pollock.

Sign Bryce Harper give him opt outs after years 2-5 knowing he will. Then look to add some guys at the end of free agency. Bryce Harper is a generational talent that immediately changes the lineup. His impact would be beyond the WAR he adds with his personal production.

What are the real medical reports on Ces? If he is expected back this year you need to work with that. Because of that I measure Harper’s willingness to play 1B because it gives us flexibility and a place to play him if Ces returns. Adding his bat to the lineup would allow us to trade from depth and then go defense at catcher and CF. Hamilton would be a good fit as a 5th OF and give some insurance against the inevitable Lagares injury plus speed off the bench. Obviously we need to add bullpen arms. Ideally that would be an arm in front Lugo and an arm between a Lugo and Gman with one of them being a lefty.

I'd bank on last year's second-half record being closer to the "real" Mets, and go for defense, speed and more pitching, all via FA:

Maldonado
Hamilton
Britton

I was thinking Hamilton would be a nice low risk signing...

I would probably go Hamilton, trade for Cervelli, Miller and see if there is enough for one more piece of the puzzle (Familia, Soria?)
