If they get another quality late inning RP, I’d be all in.

Jays signed Phelps to an incentive laden deal. Really wanted him.

I'm ok with Dowdy & Zamora as the mop up guy and lefty specialist. Having a strong 8th and 9th inning guy makes having a specialist less necessary.

Gselman is a marginal 7th inning guy, but a team's 7th inning guys pitch almost every day, he needs a strong partner.

Lugo's arm is barely holding together. He's more of a 2 inning 6th inning guy used once or twice a week when the starters only give 4 or 5.

7th inning guys pitch in every loss, in the hopes to keep the game close, and in wins when the starters don't go deep. A team today needs two, they barely have one.

Some of the guys from last year could mature into such a role. Don't start with them, make them earn it, they didn't last year.
Someone always gets hurt, so depth is critical.

Bashlor is being underrated here. He's my favorite of the young-ish (or new) arms. Dowdy isn't making the roster over him.

The last arm in the Pen is not the best available arm. It's the best available arm that the team will lose if they don't keep him on the ML roster.

I think Bashlor will get a shot, but not out of the gate.

I think there's a chance both make it.

Diaz
Familia
Lugo
Gsellman
Avilan
two spots for young guys

Dowdy has a leg up on Bashlor, Smith, Hanhold, and Zamora in that he needs to stay on the 25-man, but the others (besides Hanhold, really, who has a tiny sample) have an advantage in major league experience. But choose your favorite two of those five. Bashlor is my favorite of those five; I think he'll win the spot.

I think Zamora likely starts in AAA if Avilan breaks camp with the team. Zamora was used pretty exclusively as a LOOGY last year, and while he was effective, having two LOOGYs on a roster is taxing to the rest of the pen.

Hanhold is solidly below Smith and Bashlor in the pecking order, imo. He's an option, but he'll have to really wow in order to jump either.

So, in the end, I think it'll come down to Bashlor, Smith, and Dowdy for those two spots. Unless they go with an 8-man pen, in which those are the three I'd predict will make it.

What about Cody Allen? His numbers last year weren’t that bad and he is still on the younger side. If he returns to his career norms that pen could be lethal
