A “Stopper” is an ace pitcher who can stop a bad patch from becoming a streak. When your team has lost a couple in a row, sometimes you have the kind of staff ace that can step up and toss a string of zeros, and sometimes you don’t. Matt Harvey is that kind of ace pitcher. The Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 4-0 behind 7 innings of shutout, 5 hit baseball from Harvey. Most of the game the Mets held on to a thin1 run lead from an early Michael Cuddyer home run, before icing the game with 3 runs on a bases loaded Daniel Murphy pop-double that cleared the bases. Murphy and Juan Lagares each had two hits, and Jeurys Familia notched his 10th save.
