The Mets much maligned bullpen came up big yesterday with 8 innings of one run relief capped off by two perfect innings from closer Jenrry Mejia as the Mets beat the Padres in the series finale 3-1. Daisukje Matsuzaka became ill right before the game and barely managed to make it thru the first inning, leaving an already strapped Mets pen facing a long day.

Carlos Torres (4 IP 1 run 3 hits) Vic Black (2 IP 0 runs 1 hit) and Mejia rose to the occasion. Curtis Granderson hit his 9th homer, Daniel Murphy and Bobby Abreu each doubled in a run, and Lucas Duda had two hits to give the Mets just enough offense.

“I knew I wasn’t physically fit to fill the starter’s role but I wanted to do as much as I could,” Matsuzaka said through a translator. “That ended up being only one inning.”

Matsuzaka gingerly walked off the mound when he was done, shook hands with Collins and headed straight for the clubhouse.
