The rest of the baseball world confirmed what Mets fans have been saying for years: Juan Lagares is a Gold Glove center fielder. The Mets defensive specialist was officially given the Gold Glove award today in a move many expected based on Lagares’ unparallelled prowess both in terms of his range, and his gun of an arm.

“I’m very happy and excited,” said Lagares, who noted that the elbow injury that shortened his season is getting better, but he’s still working through his rehab program. “It’s a very special honor to win a Gold Glove for the Mets. I’m proud to win one this early in my career.”

Lagares led all center fielders with 28 Defensive Runs Saved in 2014. He became the first Mets player to win a Gold Glove Award since David Wright and Carlos Beltran were honored in 2008. Lagares joins Beltran (who won three times) and Tommie Agee (who won once) as the only Mets outfielders to win the award.

Lagares won on the combination of his range and throwing arm, both of which combined to put him at the top of the leaderboards in the advanced stats of Defensive Runs Saved and Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR).
