The Mets will promote infielder Wilmer Flores and have DFA’d SS Omar Quintanilla as they search for answers at SS and to get more from their struggling offense. Flores has played extensively this season at SS in Las Vegas and has gotten off to a good start offensively with 5 HRs and a .307 AVG.

Though Flores has played mostly second and third base in recent years, the Mets tried him out extensively at shortstop this winter in an attempt to see if he could handle the position. A natural shortstop as a teenager in his native Venezuela, Flores moved from the position two years ago amidst concerns about his defensive range.

For the Mets, however, those apprehensions pale in comparison to the offensive issues currently plaguing them — and Flores’ greatest strength is unquestionably his bat. After hitting 15 homers and 36 doubles in 107 games last year at Triple-A Las Vegas, Flores already has five long balls and five doubles in 28 games this season, with a .307 average and .860 OPS.
