Daniel Murphy and Curtis Granderson hit 3 run homers, and David Wright had 3 hits including a 2B, 2 runs scored, and 2 RBI as the Mets took game two of the slugfest series from the Yankees 12-7. The game turned on an impressive 3.2 innings of relief work from Daisuke Matsuzaka who struck out 4 and allowed one run. It was not a great outing for Zack Wheeler who has struggled to find his form this season. Wheeler went 4.1 IP walked 6, gave up 7 hits and 5 runs.

Terry Collins spoke confidently Tuesday afternoon about how Zack Wheeler would do on perhaps the biggest stage the 23-year-old right-hander has seen yet.

“It’s really going to be fun to watch this kid,” he said.

No, it wasn’t.

The Mets scored 11 runs while Wheeler was in the game, and he still couldn’t get the 15 outs he needed to qualify for a win. Collins allowed Wheeler to throw a career-high 118 pitches to try to get him there, but he couldn’t.
