Matt Peterson was the Mets‘ 2nd round selection in the June 2000 draft. Peterson is one of the Mets top pitching prospects. He consistently reaches 92-93 mph with his fastball and had a very polished breaking ball that he throws at various speeds and for strikes. Matt was traded to the Pirates for Kris Benson at the 2004 trade deadline.
Pitching
Peterson has great size and good mechanics. His pitchability has steadily progressed making improvements in his control and preparation with each passing season. His main drawback has been his control over his secondary pitches however this no longer appears to be a concern. He has shown good improvement in all aspects, developing a change as well as refining his breaking pitch. Featuring a superb curveball and a good fastball, Peterson can develop into a front of the rotation starter.
Other Aspects
Peterson has great demeanor, leading the FSL St. Lucie Mets to a championship with a 2-0 0.64 ERA performance including a game 7 one hitter in the playoffs. Off to an impressive start this season with growing support from Mets brass, there is a strong possibility that Peterson will be on the Major league roster before seasons end.
Repertoire
Fastball 91-93 occasionally touching 94-95 - many discrepancies reported on his velocity, he is generally in the low 90‘s with excellent movement; curveball is his bread and butter pitch - great 12-6 movement one of the better breaking pitches in the minor leagues, changes speeds efficiently, a plus major league pitch; change up in development stages - still learning it, only recently has put more focus on it since being promoted to AA. Control is good, needs more work on his change.
