Hawaii native Tyler Yates was selected in the 23rd round (675th overall) of the 1998 amateur draft by the Oakland Athletics. He attended the University of Hawaii-Hilo. In a December 2001 trade, Yates was obtained by the Mets from the A‘s with Mark Guthrie in exchange for the recently acquired David Justice. Tyler underwent rotator cuff surgery on February 3, 2005 and missed the 2005 season. He was non-tendered on 12/20/05. In January 2006, he was signed by the Orioles to a minor league contract, and in May 2006, he was signed by the Braves to a minor league contract.
