Yusmeiro Petit :: P last edit: 09/20/07 by: Calli Not In Organization | B: R | T: R | HT: 6-0 | WT: 230 | DOB: 11/22/84
Petit was signed by the Mets as an undrafted international free agent in 2001. He is a product of the Mets Venezuelan Summer League team. In his first season he emerged as a young pitcher to watch in the Mets organization. Ranked as the No.2 prospect in the Mets organization for 2004 by Baseball America. He also was given recognition for the Best Control in the system. Petit was traded to Florida on 11/24/05 in exchange for Carlos Delgado.
Pitching:
Petit‘s success on the mound has baffled traditional scouts. He doesn‘t have the stuff that is normally associated with the numbers that he has put up. He relies on two things; command and deception. Unlike most young pitchers Yusmeiro has excellent command with the pitches he throws and can throw them at any time, which keeps hitters off balance. Then you add his deceptive delievery and you see why hitters struggle so much against him. Hitters generally don‘t pick up his pitches and when they do its too late. It actually makes it appear that he throws harder then he really does. His weight has been a little bit of an issue as he is not the most in shape of individuals. But luckily many pitchers aren‘t, so hopefully it won‘t become much more of an issue.
Repetoire:
He has three pitches that he throws. A fastball, slurve(or curveball/slider mix) and a changeup. The fastball which he throws is a hard sinker type pitch which is generally in the upper 80‘s touching 90 or 91 on occassion. But with his delievery it makes it look much harder then it actually is. His slurve pitch is supposed to be a curveball but it has more of the action of a slider. It has a late breaking action to it. For the most part it sits in the 77-82mph range. With late movement on an already deceptive delievery you know why its tough to hit. Petit‘s changeup is also extremely effective as it has good sinking action as well. His motion for the pitch is also good as hitters think he is throwing a fastball. Normally it is thrown about as hard as his slurve is.
