The Mets signed Chavez to a 1-year contract on December 23, 2005. He was originally signed by the Mets in April 1996 as an international free agent. In 2000 he was traded to the Kansas City Royals and has since played for the Nationals and Phillies. Endy became a fan favorite in 2006 by sparking the team with speed and defense, including a spectacular catch in Game 7 of the NLCS. He was re-signed on January 16, 2006. He is a native of Valencia, Venezuela.
