The Mets signed Francisco out of the Dominican Republic on July 9, 2006. He is the son of former-MLer Tony Pena and younger brother of Tony Jr., a shortstop in the Atlanta organization. Equpped with a strong arm and impressive offensive skills, Pena is regarded as one of the top catching prospects to recently come out of the Dominican. Infamously, he was the catcher on Danny Almonte‘s Little League team despite being ineligible for residing outside the United States.
