Ian was originally drafted by the Mets in the 44th Round of the 2002 draft. Since he attended Lamar Junior College he was allowed to attend school another year before signing with the Mets in 2003 as a draft-and-follow player. Made a solid debut in Brooklyn in 2003 and was named the organizational Player of the Year for that level. Baseball America named Ian the Mets No.4 Prospect after the 2004 season. He was traded to the Red Sox for Doug Mientkiewicz on January 26, 2005.
