The Mets drafted Jason in the 24th round (720th overall) of the 1997 amateur draft. He played college ball for San Diego State University after attending El Capitan High School in Lakeside, California. Phillips has advanced through the Mets system beginning with the Pittsfield Mets (1997) and is now a capable major league catcher. He was traded to the Dodgers on March 20, 2005 in exchange for Kazuhisa Ishii.
Enigmatic hitter -- excellent eye-hand coordination, good pitch recognition, average bat speed -- mediocre swing mechanics. Potentially top 10 slowest non-pitchers over the last 30 years. Excellent defensive catcher -- teriffic working with pitchers in-game, good arm and excellent release. Average quickness around the plate.
