Kazuo Matsui :: 2B last edit: 10/15/07 by: Calli 2004 - 2006 | B: S | T: R | HT: 5-10 | WT: 185 | DOB: 10/23/75
Signed as a free agent after a 9 year career with the Seibu Lions of the Nippon Professional Baseball, Pacific League. Matsui has been generally accepted as one of the best players in Japanese baseball. Originally, the Mets moved young phenom Jose Reyes to second base to accomodate the Japanese import. But, the front office and fans were not excited by the results; the Mets would eventually have the players switch positions, moving Reyes back to his natural SS spot, and Matsui to the unfamiliar 2B. Matsui would give his all to the team, setting a record by hitting a home run in his first at bat in each of his first three major league seasons in 2004, 2005 and 2006. But Kazuo would never live up to the expectations placed upon him when he arrived, eventually becoming a part time player, and then being traded to the Colorado Rockies on June 9, 2006.
Contract/Options Status: Signed 3 yr/$20.1 M deal in December, 2003 | Signed from 2004-2006 | Complete no-trade clause
