Mike Jacobs :: 1B last edit: 04/25/10 by: sluger11787 Buffalo Bisons (AAA) | B: L | T: R | HT: 6-3 | WT: 215 | DOB: 10/30/80
Jacobs was drafted by the Mets in the 38th round of the 1999 draft out of Grossmont Junior College in California. He attended Hilltop High School in his native town of Chula Vista, CA. Mike emerged with an explosive 2003 campaign in Binghamton and earned the Mets‘ Sterling Award, naming him their top minor-leaguer that season. Despite battling through a shoulder injury in 2004 and eventually having season-ending surgery, Jake roared back in 2005 and eventually would blast a 3-run HR in his first ML AB on 8/21/05. He was traded to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Carlos Delgado on 11/24/05.

Hitting:
Probably has one of the sweetest lefthanded swings you will ever see. For Jacobs his bat is what will get him to the big leagues one day. He is a pure hitter, with power to all fields. Not a big on-base percentage guy because he comes up looking to make contact and drive in runs more then taking a walk. Could produce 20+ HR‘s a year if he gets a fair shot in the major leagues.
Running:
He‘s a catcher, so he has catcher speed. Which means don‘t look for him to steal bases.
Defense:
Right now his position on defense is up-in-the-air. The Mets have been trying him more and more at firstbase. Really the reason for that is two-fold. His bat is so good the Mets want to keep him in the lineup as much as possible. Secondly, his arm throwing out runners isn‘t great. He‘s fine blocking pitches and behind the plate calling a game. His situation is sort of like Mike Piazza‘s, except for the Mets are trying to get him experience at firstbase before he makes it to the majors. Hopefully he does well enough at first for the Mets to keep him there for the most part.
