The Mets selected Bonfe in the 21st round (644th overall) of the 2009 amateur draft out of Sierra Junior College. He had previously pitched at Creighton University before transferring to Sierra JC. He graduated from Cretin-Derham Hall High School in his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota.
