Reyes signed as an international free agent in the spring of 2000 for $20,000. He had been dubbed the savior of the Mets since nearly the beginning. He was moved to second before the 2004 season to accommodate fresh Japanese import Kazuo Matsui but has since moved back to shortstop and has become an All-Star leadoff hitter for New York. He led the National League in stolen bases three consecutive seasons (2005-2007). Reyes represented the Dominican Republic in the 2006 World Baseball Classic, and will do so again in 2009.
