The Mets signed Valentin to a one-year contract on December 8, 2005. The veteran shortstop hit 30 homeruns in 2004, but hit just .216. Last season with the Dodgers he played in just 56 games because of a knee injury. He hit .170 with 2 homers and 14 RBIs. Valentin, a native of Manati, Puerto Rico, was originallly signed by the Padres in 1986. He was re-signed to a minor league contract on January 18, 2008 and again on February 11, 2009. He ultimately decided to return to Puerto Rico after being plagued by neck discomfort.
