Juan was signed by the Philadelphia Phillies as an amateur free agent in 1980. He was traded on June 18, 1989 by the Philadelphia Phillies to the Mets for Tom Edens, Lenny Dykstra, and Roger McDowell. He appeared in 86 games in 1989 for the Mets. On December 20, 1989 he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers for Alejandro Pena and Mike Marshall. Juan Samuel was named the manager of the Binghamton Mets on January 24, 2006. As a player he was a 3-time All-Star and hit .259 over his 16-year career in the majors. Samuel spent the past 7 seasons as a coach for the Detroit Tigers. He is a native of the Dominican Republic.
