The Mets drafted Nieuwenhuis in the 3rd round (100th overall) of the 2008 amateur draft out of Azusa Pacific University. The outfielder batted .400 with 15 homers and 68 RBIs in 2008, his junior season. He previously attended Denver Christian High School and his hometown is Highlands Ranch, Colorado.
