The Mets acquired Ayala on August 17, 2008 in exchange for Anderson Hernandez. He was originally signed by the Colorado Rockies in 1999. He joined the Montreal Expos in 2002, reaching the big leagues in 2003. He became a reliable setup man for the Expos/Nationals, despite missing the 2006 season due to injury. Ayala is a native of Los Mochis, Mexico.
