Born in the Dominican Republic , Omar Minaya moved to Queens when he was eight years old. He had a short minor league career, as well as playing time in Dominican Leagues and two years of professional ball in Tuscany. In 1985 he joined the Texas Rangers scouting team as an international scout, where he helped sign players Sammy Sosa and Juan Gonzalez. Omar left Texas and joined the NY Mets staff, where he worked his way to Assistant General Manager. In 2002, he left the Mets to become the GM of the Montreal Expos becoming the first Hispanic GM in baseball history. In 2004, Omar Minaya re-joined the Mets as the General Manager.
