The Mets signed Pedro to a 4-year contract on December 16, 2004. He is widely considered one of the greatest pitchers of all-time. The right-hander came out of the LA Dodgers organization and developed a strong relationship with Mets bullpen coach Guy Conti. Conti was instrumental in Pedros development in the LA system. He spent four seasons with the Montreal Expos before his seven years with the Boston Red Sox culminated in a World Series Championship. Martinez made is first start for the 2007 season in September, less than one year after shoulder surgery.
