Sam was drafted by the Mets in the 11th round (344th overall) of the 2009 amateur draft out of Tulane. While majoring in chemical engineering, he led his squad with 16 home runs his senior year. Prior to Tulane he played at Grayson CC. He was assigned to Brooklyn to begin his pro career. His 2010 season was cut short by leg injuries suffered in a collision at home plate. Honeck attended Westlake High School in his hometown of Austin, Texas.
