August 17, 2008 -
The Mets traded SS/2B Anderson Hernandez to the Washington Nationals for RP Luis Ayala. Ayala injured his elbow on the last pitch of a World Baseball Classic game and missed the entire 2006 season. After spending the first two months of the 2007 season on the disabled list, Ayala returned to the Nationals mid-2007, pitching 42.3 innings and compiling a 3.19 Ayala pitched well for the Expos/Nationals in 2003 through 2005. Over the three years he averaged 70 appearances per year, and compiled an ERA of 2.75, and led the NL with 62 holds. In 2004 he ranked 8th in appearances with 81. In 2008, Ayala struggled with the Nats, pitching in 62 games with an ERA of 5.77. The Mets acquired Anderson Hernandez from the Tigers on January 6, 2005 in exchange for Vance Wilson. The Santo Domingo, DR native is an excellent fielder but never managed to translate his offensive success in the minors to the big level. This season, he struggled to keep his batting average above .200 in the notoriously offensive Pacific Coast Leauge. In his first year in the Mets system Baseball America tabbed him as the 8th Best prospect in the organization in 2005. They also named him the Best Defensive Infielder.
