Cyclones Defeat Yankees

Posted By NYFS Staff
June 22, 2009 - The Brooklyn Cyclones (2-0) and Staten Island Yankees (0-2) played through four rain delays and managed to get through five and a half innings before umpires called the game due to inclement weather, with the Cyclones winning the rain-shortened game, 5-2.

Winning pitcher Mark Cohoon (1-0) tossed five strong innings, allowing just two runs on back-to-back solo home runs in the second inning.  Brooklyn, however, plated four runs in the bottom half of the frame to retake the lead.  Cohoon allowed four hits and struck out five batters.

Samuel Martinez came in relief of Cohoon in the top of the sixth inning and recorded the Cyclones' first save of the season. Martinez pitched a perfect sixth inning, and struck out two Yankee batters.

The Cyclones displayed a balanced offense to compliment strong pitching.  John Servidio continued his hot start to the season, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and raising his average to .429.  Sam Honeck went 1-for-2 with two RBI, and Nick Giarraputo went 2-for-3 with one RBI.  Luis Nieves drove in a fifth run for Brooklyn.

The Cyclones travel to Hudson Valley on Monday, before returning to Brooklyn on Tuesday night for one of the most highly anticipated games of the season. On June 23rd, the Brooklyn Cyclones will be transformed into the Baracklyn Cyclones, honoring the 44th President of the United States with a night of patriotic partying at the ballpark.  The team will wear one-night-only "Baracklyn" jerseys, and the first 2,500 fans will receive a Baracklyn bobblehead.
