St Lucie Mets 2009 Wrap Up
Posted By NYFS Staff
September 17, 2009 -
The staff at Tradition Field would like to thank YOU, the fans, for making the 2009 St. Lucie Mets season AMAZIN'! From April 9th-September 6th, 95,598 of you passed through the gates of Tradition Field. Despite a losing season, the St. Lucie Mets came out as winners thanks to you. The players did their part as well, as several St. Lucie Mets players etched their names among the Florida State League's leaders. Outfielder Brahiam Maldonado was the home run king of the Florida State League, ending the season with 18 home runs. Maldonado also led the St. Lucie Mets in RBI's with 73, earning him a second place spot for RBI's in the league. Right on Maldonado's tail was Mets centerfielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Nieuwenhuis led the league with 91 runs scored and 35 doubles and ranked second in homers with 16, third in RBI's with 71, and fifth in hits with 132. These accomplishments led to Nieuwenhuis' selection to the postseason All-Star team. Adding to the accomplishments of Mets outfielders was Carlos Guzman. Guzman led the St. Lucie Mets in batting average, posting a .290 batting average for the season, good for fifth in the league. He also had the fourth-most hits in the league with 137. Third baseman Zach Lutz also put up impressive numbers with a late season surge. He ended the year with a .381 on-base percentage, the second best in the league. Scott Shaw dominated the St. Lucie Mets pitching staff. The righty led the team in wins (8), strikeouts (118), and ERA (3.73).
