Cyclones Sweep Spikes

Posted By NYFS Staff
July 11, 2010 - The Cyclones beat the State College Spikes by a score of 9-3 on Saturday night to complete the three game sweep in front of 7,544 fans at MCU Park.  The win keeps Brooklyn a half-game out of first place in the McNamara Division with a record of 13-9.

The Cyclones put together another impressive offensive night, using the long ball to score nine runs.  RF Cory Vaughn went deep twice -- once in the first inning and again in the seventh -- to improve his league-leading home run total to six.  SS Rylan Sandoval recorded his third home run of the season in the sixth inning, and LF Kurt Steinhauer joined in with his second home run in the eighth.  On the day, Vaughn went 2-for-3 with four RBI, two runs, and a walk.  Sandoval was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs, while Steinhauer posted a 1-for-4 night with two runs and one RBI.  2B James Shroeder had a near-perfect night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs and one RBI. C Taylor Freeman recorded two hits, while 1B Jeff Flagg, DH Joe Bonfe, and 3B Brian Harrison checked in with one hit apiece.

LHP Chris Hilliard (4-0) recorded his fourth win of the season, allowing three runs on eight hits, with four strikeouts and a walk in six innings of work. Wes Wrenn came on in the seventh inning and pitched two scoreless frames, while striking out one without allowing a hit.  Adam Kolarek made his Cyclones debut in the ninth inning, closing out the game by striking out the side in impressive fashion.

The Cyclones travel to Lowell for a three-game set, before returning to MCU Park on Wednesday, July 14th to take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at 7pm.  That night, the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a Wally Backman: Then & Now bobblehead, featuring Wally as a 1986 Mets second baseman, and also as the Cyclones' manager.
