Mets, Alou Agree to Deal
By NYFS Staff
December 19, 2004 -
NYFS has learned that Moises Alou has agreed to sign with the New York Mets. Staff reporter Mark Healey was informed of the signing from a source close to the situation. Alou has spent the last three seasons with the Chicago Cubs.
As reported first by NYFS a few weeks ago, Omar Minaya had targeted the veteran outfielder as an important presence both on and off the field. His interest in joining New York intensified "right after the Pedro press conference...he called his agent and told him to get it done."
Although exact terms of the deal are not yet known, the deal is believed to be worth $6-8 million for 2005 with a vesting option for 2006.
Alou, 38, hit .293 last season with 39 homeruns and 106 RBI's. However, he hit just .247 away from Wrigley Field with 19 less homeruns in one less at-bat.
